What is a doula?
A doula is your sister and friend, your confidante, your advocate. Doulas provides continuous emotional, physical, informational care to a mother and her family during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Unlike a medical provider, a doula does not perform clinical tasks or make decisions for you. Instead I walk beside you offering guidance and hands-on support every step of the way during your transition from maiden to mother.
During pregnancy doulas can educate, help with aches and pains commonly related to pregnancy, cook supportive nourishing meals, provide resources and referrals, and encourage and support you through your pregnancy journey. We also will discuss your birth plans and preferences. During labor + childbirth I am your advocate, safe place, and cheerleader. During the postpartum period doulas support the mother so that she can rest and recuperate with her new baby. This can include meal prepping, belly binding, light household work, breastfeeding support, birth debriefing, and much more.
Research has shown that hiring a doula can have numerous benefits. Continuous doula support during a mother’s labor + delivery decreases the c-section rate by 50%, requests for an epidural by 60%, the length of labor by 25%,and the use of Pitocin by 40%. Women who choose to have a doula often report increased satisfaction with their birth and postpartum experiences, reduced rates of medical interventions, and enhanced emotional well-being. A doula's supportive presence has the power to instill confidence, reduce anxiety, and help you embrace the transformation from maiden to mother.
As a traditional doula, my role is deeply rooted in honoring the sacred journey of motherhood. I support the mother-baby dyad as a whole, recognizing the powerful bond between them and the importance of nurturing with gentleness, patience, consent, and respect. When the mother and baby are respected and cared for, families and mothers thrive.
